(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – The House Majority Leader today announced that Democrats will not write a budget for next year and may raise taxes on the middle-class. This will be the first time since the current budget rules were written in 1974 that the House will fail to pass a federal budget blueprint.
“House Democrats are either unwilling or unable to make the choices necessary to bring fiscal sanity to Congress. By failing to write a budget, they are throwing away an opportunity to rein in their runaway spending and return to the fiscal discipline that economic experts say is needed to create jobs and grow our economy. This also means Congress has missed another opportunity to stop the Administration’s illegal shutdown of Yucca Mountain.
“Those proposing tax increases are out of touch with the hard realities facing our middle-class families and small businesses. Increasing taxes will cost jobs, stall our economy and provide an excuse for this Congress to spend even more.
“The misguided stimulus spending bills, bailouts and trillion dollar government takeover of health care have left Americans saddled with the largest deficit in our nation’s history. Today’s announcement continues this Congress down the reckless path of bigger government and more spending – with no end in sight. Make no mistake, those who control Congress will still spend your money – they just aren’t willing to put forward a plan that tells the American people what they intend to spend it on.
“It’s time for this Congress to stop spending, end the bailouts and write a responsible budget plan.”
