MARQUETTE- Today, U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) participated in a roundtable meeting at Northern Michigan University to hear from local business owners, economic development organizations, and students who have benefitted from Northern Initiatives lending program. Over the past15 years, Northern Initiatives has made over 530 loans totaling over $29 million to small businesses in Michigan that would otherwise have been unable to get the capital they need to invest and expand. Northern Initiatives is also an affiliate of Northern Michigan University’s new Center of Resources and Enterprise (CORE-NMU), a one-stop shop for local and regional businesses.
“Small businesses are the engines that drive our economy, creating over 60% of all American jobs,” said Stabenow. “Northern Initiatives and Northern Michigan University have been instrumental in providing small businesses across the Upper Peninsula with the credit and the resources they need to make investments and create jobs. I will continue working to increase lending to small businesses in Michigan during this difficult economic time.”
As a member of the Senate Finance Committee, Stabenow has been a long-time advocate for programs that improve the flow of credit to small businesses. She is working to secure funding for Northern Michigan University’s new Center of Resources and Enterprise (CORE-NMU), in partnership with Northern Initiatives. CORE-NMU will provide services such as market analysis, product development, and loan options. CORE-NMU will also facilitate the placement of student interns at businesses to assist with specific projects.
