United States Senator Al Franken (D-Minn.) announced his co-sponsorship of Senator Amy Klobuchar’s (D-Minn.) North Country National Scenic Trail (NCNST) Route Adjustment Act of 2009 (S. 553), which would revise the authorized route of the NCNST in northeastern Minnesota to include existing hiking trails along Lake Superior's north shore, in Superior National Forest, and in Chippewa National Forest.
“The North Country National Scenic Trail is one of this country’s greatest assets,” said Sen. Franken. “It’s time we include Minnesota’s Arrowhead officially as part of its authorized route.”
The NCNST is the longest of the eleven National Scenic Trails authorized by Congress. It passes through seven states, including Minnesota, and stretches more than 4,600 miles from Crown Point in eastern New York to Lake Sakakawea in western North Dakota. The NCNST is administered by the National Park Service, but it is built and maintained primarily by the volunteers of the North Country Trail Association (NCTA).
S. 553 is also cosponsored by Sens. Russ Feingold (D-Wisc.), Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), and Carl Levin (D-Mich.).
