While the United States has serious long-standing policy differences with Syria, including in particular its support for Hamas and Hezbollah, I have long believed that it is in our interest to return an ambassador to Damascus to probe the possibilities for bridging these differences. President Obama has made a wise choice in Ambassador Ford, an extremely talented senior diplomat who has served as both ambassador to Algeria and the deputy chief of mission in Iraq. As Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, I will work to ensure that Ambassador Ford gets a confirmation hearing as soon as possible."
