BigNews.Biz - Feb 04,2010 - Williamsburg, VA---Action-packed, fun and easy on the joints are words that describe pickleball, one of the fastest growing sports for active adults in Williamsburg and throughout the country.
Lennar’s active adult community, Colonial Heritage in Williamsburg has become an epicenter for those interested in playing pickleball.
“Pickleball is a fun and addictive game, said Page Sutton, Colonial Heritage resident and USA Pickleball Association Ambassador. The rules are easy to follow. Success in pickleball relies on basic hand-eye coordination and some mobility.”
A cross between ping-pong, badminton, racquetball and tennis, pickleball is simple for beginners to learn but can develop into a fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players.
Invented in 1965 by Bill Bell and former United States Representative Joel Pritchard from Washington State, the sport got it’s unique name from Pritchard’s cocker spaniel, Pickle who used to run away with the ball during games.
Pickleball is typically played indoors or outdoors on a smaller, tennis-like court with the net lowered to 34 inches at the center. Players use a perforated plastic baseball, similar to a whiffle ball and wood or composite paddles. The object of the game is to score points by successfully hitting the ball across the net without it being successfully returned by the opponent(s).
Colonial Heritage initiated their pickleball club just over two years ago and with Sutton’s help, the group has grown from a small handful of participants to well over 50.
“It is funny to think that just a couple of years ago, few people knew what pickleball was; now more seniors are playing pickleball than almost anything else,” Sutton said.
The sport has gained in popularity because it offers a much lower impact athletic option to tennis. Because of the smaller court and slower pace of the game there is less pounding and stress on body joints. Pickleball mostly relies on concentration and friendly competition rather than speed and power.
