NYC Construction Accident Fatalities Dropped in 2009 New York construction accident attorney says that in 2009, there were fewer fatalities from NYC construction accidents than ever before.
BigNews.Biz - Jan 21,2010 - According to George W. Ilchert, Esq., a partner with Lurie, Ilchert, Mac Donnell and Ryan, LLP (http://www.limrlaw.com), a personal injury law firm with experience in Manhattan construction accident litigation, New York City construction-related fatalities dropped substantially in 2009.
“Last year, there were only three workers who died as a result of construction accidents,” says Ilchert. “In 2008, 19 construction accident fatalities were reported. That is an incredible 84 percent decrease in the number of people killed in construction accidents.”
According to Ilchert, there were 12 construction workers killed on the job in 2007, while there were 18 construction accident fatalities in 2006. In fact, he notes, the number of construction accident fatalities in 2009 were the fewest ever.
“Officials are attributing the drop in construction accident fatalities to increased enforcement and better supervision at construction sites,” says Ilchert. “Although there has been a significant drop in fatalities, however, reports of injuries due to construction accidents are on the rise.”
Ilchert says that the reported increase in New York construction accidents does not necessarily mean that there have been more accidents than in the past. Instead, he says that officials are attributing the rise to better reporting on the part of contractors.
“Although there were just three New York construction accident fatalities in 2009, we believe that it is three too many,” says Ilchert. “We do applaud the city of New York, however, for implementing the better oversight of construction jobs that has resulted in this decrease.”
