Children’s School Backpacks need to be good for your child’s back After a year on more of the school bag being thrown around the playground, used as goal posts and carrying heavy textbooks around it’s no wonder that the school rucksack is looking a little tired and
BigNews.Biz - Jul 25,2009 - When choosing a backpack to go walking, running or even skiing in we always make sure that we buy a rucksack that fits well and will not cause strain to our backs. This is just common sense but when it comes to your childrens school backpack it can be more to do with how cool they look in the playground than the comfort from using it on a day to day basis. Children’s rucksacks are especially important as they will probably need to take a large amount of books and kit every school day. Creating such discomfort to their backs in early life can have a serious effect as they grow up.
Below are just a few pieces of advice which you need to take on board when purchasing a new school bag:
Remember that one size does not fit all
A child’s rucksack is a little like a pair of shoes in that you need to choose a bag that fits properly and is the right size. In order for the backpack to fit properly, the bottom of the rucksack should align with the curve of the lower back with the bag dropping no lower than 4 inches below the waist. The shoulder straps must be tightly but comfortably secured with around 1 to 2 inches below the top of the shoulders.
Quality matters
Like any product the childs backpack must be produced properly by a brand that you know and trust. Here are just a few tell tale signs to look out for in terms of a quality childrens rucksack:
• Look out for loose stitching or threads that are not in the right place, which can indicate poor manufacturing
• The corners of a backpack show a lot about the quality of the manufacturing so any fabric edges can fray quickly and can even get stuck in the zipper.
• Poor quality zips made out of plastic or low quality metal can easily break rendering the bag useless until a new zip is bought.
Comfort is the main aim
Above all, comfort is the main aim and you should look out for well padded shoulder straps and back padding to ensure a comfortable childrens backpack. The shoulder straps must be the right width apart for the correct weight distribution across the back. High visibility material can also be a vital feature for any child riding a bike or even walking home in the evening.
Prevent injury with a lighter load
A lighter load is of course beneficial but this sometimes is unavoidable due to heavy text books and a range of different sports equipment. Some associations recommend carrying no more that 15 percent of your body weight on your back so this should be considered.
