BigNews.Biz - Dec 30,2016 - Brown, Portman Annoucne $1.2 Billion Authorization for Military Systems that Support Jobs at Lima Joint Systems Manufacturing
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sens. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and Rob Portman (R-OH) announced that President Obama signed into law the Fiscal Year 2017 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which authorizes funding for the Abrams Tank and the Stryker Vehicle – critical work is done on both systems at Lima’s Joint Systems Manufacturing Center (JSMC). The NDAA includes more than $652 million to support modifications to the Abrams Tank and more than $579 million for the Stryker Vehicle.
“Some of the safest and most advanced military vehicles in the world are made in Lima,” Brown said. “In October, we had the honor of bringing Under Secretary Murphy to the Joint Systems Manufacturing Center to highlight how important continued federal investment in the Abrams Tank and the Stryker Vehicle is to our military readiness and preparedness. We will continue to support these federal investments to strengthen our national security and bolster northwest Ohio’s economy.”
“The best tanks in the world are made in Lima, Ohio,” Portman said. “And with this $1 billion investment, Congress is recognizing that and ensuring that the JSMC continues to provide these tanks to our troops. This is good news for taxpayers, good news for our military, and it’s very good news for Lima, and I’m proud of the role I played with Senator Brown in making it happen.”
In October 2016, Brown and Portman brought Under Secretary of the Army Patrick J. Murphy to Lima for a tour of the Joint Systems Manufacturing Center (JSMC). Brown and Portman have been longtime champions of the JSMC and have worked over the years with the Senate Armed Services Committee, the Senate Appropriations Committee, and U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) leadership to promote the work done in Lima.
In March 2016, Brown wrote to his Senate Armed Services and Appropriations Committee colleagues to support inclusion of the Abrams Tank and Stryker Vehicle in the NDAA and the Defense Appropriations bill.
In February 2016, Brown applauded the inclusion of funding for the Abrams Tank and the Stryker Vehicle in President Obama’s Fiscal Year 2017 budget proposal. Brown wrote to U.S. Secretary of the Army John McHugh in August 2015 to request these funds.
