Reid Introduced Bill In 2010 & 2011 To Put An End To Gravel Pit Near Henderson
Washington, D.C. – Nevada Senator Harry Reid and Clark County Commissioner Steve Sisolak announce that Cemex, one of two companies that have applications for the Sloan Hills gravel pit, is no longer pursuing the gravel pit. Senator Reid introduced a bill in 2010 and 2011 to stop a major proposed gravel operation near Henderson that threatened the health and safety of local residents. Attached is the letter from Cemex to Commissioner Sisolak announcing their decision.
“I have heard from thousands of Clark County residents who strongly oppose the Sloan Hills gravel pit,” said Senator Harry Reid. “I share their concerns and am pleased Cemex is no longer pursuing their application for this ill-conceived project. Keeping our communities safe and healthy is critical and the bill I introduced last year would put an end to the proposed gravel pit once and for all.”
“Clark County residents are rightly concerned about the proposed gravel pit and Cemex’s announcement is a victory for my constituents,” said Commissioner Steve Sisolak. “This proposed project could cause respiratory problems and other health problems and I thank Senator Reid for his leadership on the federal level to stop this project in its entirety.”
Senator Reid introduced legislation in 2010 and again in 2011 to stop the development of Sloan Hills gravel pit near Henderson. This bill would stop development of the proposed 640-acre gravel pit by withdrawing the area from mining. Were the project to continue, the resulting mine would blast rock, crush gravel, kick up dust and consume precious water resources up to twenty-four hours a day, every day, for 30 years—all of which would occur just a stone’s throw away from Henderson neighborhoods.
