WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Mike Johanns issued the following statement after the Obama Administration's Department of Homeland Security announced it will no longer be deporting illegal immigrants younger than 30 who were brought to the United States before they were 16, and will instead issue them a work permit:
"First and foremost, the announcement is the latest in a troubling line of cases in which the White House is blatantly ignoring the Constitution and the will of Congress. The Senate has rejected the DREAM Act three times since 2007, and it is unfortunate the President feels he can simply sidestep the legislative branch to essentially create law.
"However, I recognize the plight of children in this country illegally through no fault of their own. There is no question our nation must address the problem of illegal immigration, but it must be done in a constructive way that does not incentivize illegal immigration or reward those who enter this country illegally. This policy change does not meet that standard."
