BigNews.Biz - Jun 12,2012 - (ABERDEEN, Miss.) – Up to 1,000 quality lots of merchandise, culled from numerous prominent estates and collections, will be sold Saturday, June 23, at 9 a.m. (CST), by Stevens Auction Company, in the firm’s gallery located at 609 North Meridian Street in Aberdeen. An open house preview will be held Friday, June 22, from 10-7, and on auction day from 8-9 a.m.
Headlining the auction will be the estates of Dr. Lana Silverthorn and Dr. Patricia Stephens (both deceased, from Magnolia Springs, Ala., and both former longtime professors at the University at Southern Alabama). Also offered will be prominent estates from Atlanta, Ga., and Birmingham, Ala., plus other consignments. New items were still pouring in at press time.
“This will be a monumental mid-summer estate auction, and it’s getting bigger every day,” said Dwight Stevens of Stevens Auction Company. “New pictures are continually being added to our website, so the best advice I can give to bidders is to log on to stevensauction.com.” There will be no Internet bidding for the auction, but phone and absentee bids will be accepted.
Sold will be marvelous period furniture pieces (by such renowned American makers as J.H. Belter, J. & J.W. Meeks and R.J. Horner), an exceptional fine art collection, a large collection of music boxes, early 19th century lighting, antique handmade rugs, sterling silver, Old Paris porcelains, brilliant cut glass pieces, old wicker (signed Hayward Wakefield) and more.
The John H. Belter furniture pieces will include a rosewood rococo parlor suite with a sofa, love seat, side parlor chairs and arm chair, beige in color, all in the Rosalie With Grapes pattern; a rosewood rococo laminated parlor side chair in the fountain elms pattern with green and gold silk upholstery; and an armchair and side chair in the Rosalie Without Grapes pattern.
Fans of J. & J. W. Meeks will be impressed by the signed rosewood rococo dressing table with acanthus carved base and mirror, made circa 1850 and measuring 55 inches tall by 24 inches wide. An R. J. Horner lot of note is the true partner’s desk with drawers and a door on both sides, in original mint condition and with extensive carving, including griffins (circa 1890).
Other period furniture pieces will feature an oversized walnut Victorian cylinder roll secretary desk with burl trim, 114 inches tall, in mint condition (circa 1860); a rosewood rococo parlor cabinet with bird’s-eye maple top, 56 inches tall (circa 1850); and a mahogany Federal love seat with beautiful scrolled arms and gold upholstery with claw feet, made around 1830.
Vases and urns will include a magnificent pair of Old Paris vases, palace-sized, depicting a French Victorian lady and gentleman, in great condition and boasting great color, 29 inches tall (circa 1870); a pair of monumental 19th century Royal Vienna two-part urns, 42 inches tall; a large Sevres urn with bronze handles and faces, with original cap and artwork, signed and marked on the bottom (circa 1880); and a pair of Old Paris vases, 18
