BigNews.Biz - May 24,2012 - (MARIANNA, Fla.) – The estate of Donna Phillabaum – a longtime Florida resident who owns many antiques and collectibles, many of them handed down to her by her parents and grandparents – will be sold Saturday, June 23, at Ms. Phillabaum’s home, located at 3346 Quail Road in Marianna.
The auction will be held by The Specialists of the South, Inc., based in Panama City, with Internet bidding provided by LiveAuctioneers.com. Phone and absentee bids will also be taken. Marianna (zip code: 32448) is a town located along Interstate 10 in the Florida panhandle, west of Tallahassee and northwest of Panama City. Ms. Phillabaum has lived in Florida since 1979.
Her estate comprises over 300 lots of items in a rainbow of categories: older Roseville pieces, glass and china, massive collections of phonograph records, matchbooks and Coca-Cola bottle caps, ephemera (to include antique Valentines, advertising items and blotters from various companies, beautifully kept in albums), some first-edition books and a vintage railroad lantern from Urbana, Ohio.
Also up for bid will be collector plates (including a full set of the Gone With the Wind series by Knowles China, with artwork by American artist Raymond Kursar), a few firearms (including an English Webley & Scott revolver valued at $500 and an antique Crescent Firearms 12 gauge shotgun appraised at $175), vintage tool box and tools, old postage stamps, sheet music, embroidery pictures, NASCAR items, costume jewelry, furs and more.
Collectors will have a field day, with items like the milk glass plate with pierced lattice border and painted floral scenic décor, a Japanese Moriage ware hand-painted bowl with applied slipwork designs, and a 10-inch Victorian-era Carnival glass vase with a period photo showing a person in Victorian dress standing next to a table with the very same vase to be sold sitting on it.
The Roseville pieces will feature a Walter Lily 9-inch-wide hanging basket, a 1934 double-handled blue Clemana bowl, a 7-inch Columbine vase and a 6 ½ inch Clematis vase. Dish ware will include a saucer, bowl and ladle mayonnaise set in the collectible Azalea pattern, a Shirley Temple set Ms. Phillabum owned as a child and a tea set her mother bought for her in Germany.
One item sure to attract attention is a framed 30 inch by 40 inch tapestry that came from the house of the former owner of the Eagle Theater in Blountstown, Fla., purchased at auction in the early 1980s by Ms. Phillabaum. The tapestry depicts a romantic pastoral scene of figures frolicking in a garden. Ms. Phillabaum believes the piece was originally purchased in Germany.
The stamp collection was begun, in part, prior to World War II by Ms. Phillabaum’s uncle’s wife’s mother. Many are exclusive to the World War II era. There is also a booklet with a stamp and coin of the Pope that Ms. Phillabaum purchased while on a trip to the Vatican. The only other stamps bought by Ms. Phillabaum were some first-day covers from the ‘70s and ‘80s.
