BigNews.Biz - May 02,2012 - How to Make Cute Sleeves on a Regular T-Shirt
A plain T-shirt can be boring. These days, even with a print or logo, many T-shirts have cute design details such as an interesting neckline, unusual fit or fancy sleeve. Changing a neckline or the fit can be challenging without remaking the whole top, but adding some detail to the sleeve can make your boring old T-shirt new. This project makes a fashion-forward tee with ombre dyed sleeve hems, gathered slightly at the center of the sleeve with a ribbon bow.
Instructions
1
Dip the bottom two inches of each sleeve hem into hot water, wetting them through.
2
Remove the shirt from the water.
3
Add 1 teaspoon of dye to the bowl of hot water.
4
Dip the bottom one inch of each sleeve hem into the dye bath. Let each hem sit in the dye bath for 30 seconds. Be careful not to get dye on the rest of the shirt.
5
Rinse the hem of the sleeves thoroughly under a faucet until the water runs clear.
6
Allow the sleeves to dry.
7
Cut two 2-inch pieces of elastic.
8
Sew one piece of elastic to the center of each sleeve, one inch from the sleeve hem. Sew only the center inch of the elastic using a machine zigzag stitch, stretching the elastic as you sew. The fabric should gather into the elastic.
9
Cut one-half inch, the part that it not sewn to the fabric, off each end of the pieces of elastic.
10
Make two bows out of the ribbon, each with 1/2-inch loops and 1 1/2-inch tails.
11
Sew each bow to the center of the sleeve at the edge of the cap, where the shoulder meets the sleeve. Sew the bow to the sleeve fabric through the center of the bow.
