Appalachian Regional Commission and State Sources will provide a Combined Total of $100,000 to Develop a Strategic Economic Plan Focused on Advancing the Community
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Barbara A. Mikulski and Ben Cardin (both D-Md.) announced that the Hagerstown-Washington County Industrial Foundation has received a $50,000 grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) to develop a Washington County Strategic Economic Development Plan. The plan will help the County attract new businesses and transition the county to the high-paying jobs needed for future generations.
"This grant is about jobs in Western Maryland," Senator Mikulski said. "This federal funding will help grow Washington County's economy, making smart investments in attracting new businesses and creating jobs. I will keep fighting to help our Maryland communities continue to grow."
"The Appalachian Regional Commission is a great example of federal investment that works on a state and local level for the people of Maryland," said Senator Cardin. "These much-needed funds will create jobs and further economic development in Washington County. I will continue to promote leveraging federal resources like these grants for the benefit of our local communities and their economy."
The Economic Development Strategic Plan will include an in-depth review of the County's strengths and weaknesses, an assessment of competition in surrounding jurisdictions, and development of a set of key strategies in facilitating economic growth in the region.
In addition to ARC funds, state sources will provide $50,000, bringing the total project funding to $100,000. The ARC is a federal-state partnership that works with the people of Appalachia to create opportunities for self-sustaining economic development and improved quality of life.
