First celebrated in 1923, by the Spanish booksellers, to commemorate the death of Miguel de Cervantes, it was organized by the UNESCO in 1995 as an effort to promote reading, publishing and copyright.
Today also marks the Catalonian Festival and marks the birth and death anniversary of the Bard-of-Avon, William Shakespeare. It also marks the death anniversaries of Miguel de Cervantes, Inca Garcilaso de la Vega and Josep Pla, and the birth anniversaries of Maurice Druon, Manuel Mejía Vallejo and Halldór Laxness.
