BigNews.Biz - Dec 20,2011 - Taking Fosamax or osteoporosis drug Alendronate with black coffee or orange juice reduced its absorption by about 60%. This, is according to the recent news published on DigitalJournal.com.
The study pointed out that Fosamax needs to be taken with water on an empty stomach at least 30 minutes before breakfast for best result. Taking Fosamax with coffee or other beverages lessens its effectiveness.
The news article also made mention of the side effects of Fosamax despite it being considered as an effective osteoporosis drug. Fosamax has been associated to several side effects like osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ), femur fractures, and thigh bone fracture.
Merck, Fosamax's manufacturer, reported on June 30 of this year that there are approximately 1, 650 cases (drug lawsuits) had been filed and were pending against them in both federal and estate court.

Fosamax or alendronate sodium, is a bisphosphonate drug used as treatment and prevention of osteoporosis and other bone loss problems. It is mainly used for Prophylaxis and treatment of female osteoporosis, Treatment of male osteoporosis, Prevention and treatment of corticosteroid-associated osteoporosis together with supplements of calcium and vitamin D, and treatment for Paget's disease. But, in spite of its effectiveness, recent studies and researches show evidences that it has adverse side effects.
