BigNews.Biz - Jul 10,2011 - Team Moksha from M S Ramaiah Institute of Technology, Bangalore has won 10th place in the Design Competition in its category at the 19th Annual Intelligent Ground Vehicle Competition(www.igvc.org) held at Oakland University, Michigan, USA in June 2011. There were 54 participants from all over the world and Team Moksha was the only representation from India.
The competition was conducted by the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) and is one of the most prestigious outdoor unmanned ground vehicle competitions held across the world. The event was sponsored by the United States Department of Defense, Lockheed Martin, SAIC and other pioneers in the field of Artificial Intelligence.
The vehicle is capable of lane detection and following while avoiding obstacles in its path and reaching specified GPS coordinates without any obstruction autonomously. Sensors such as Digital Camera, SONAR and GPS Receiver have been used and the data obtained from the sensors is sent to an on-board laptop. A C++ program is used to process the data and the instructions for the motion of the vehicle are sent to a Motor Controller, which controls the motors by using PWM. The vehicle is powered by a 12V battery and has Solar Panels for self-charging.
The Team come up with several innovations in the project including the use of a new algorithm for image processing, and also a unique Split-Frame technology for the chassis.
The overall cost for the project was Rs.5 lakh and was sponsored by MSRIT, Department of Technical Education, Government of Karnataka, and Ostrich Mobility Instruments Pvt. Ltd.
This project has various applications in Military Mobility, Intelligent Transportation Systems, and Industrial Manufacturing.
